The “T3arc” studio has brought the idea to life. The Mexican city Tepoztlan now boasts an original ensemble of concrete tubes that have been cleaned and dried up to become hotel rooms for visitors from all over the world. TuboHotel presents a number of tubes that only offer single or twin beds, whereas all the facilities like shower, bathroom and cafeteria are located nearby outside.

The Mexican hotel is the second version of an eco-friendly hostel designed by Andreas Strauss. The first hotel of the kind was built not far from Essen, Germany, and featured round plastic doors to each room, as oppose to transparent glass entries in the Mexican version.

Both kinds of the tubed hotels certainly require a warm dry climate and, amazingly, offer the services at very moderate prices established to attract “green” visitors and promote the idea to masses.

First let’s take a look at an old-style shower enclosure. It consisted of panes of toughened glass, usually frosted or textured to limit visibility. These panes were surrounded by aluminum frames. You had the option of a sliding door or a hinged door, but that was about all. The Tauari flooring and the wood home theater panel provide a warm atmosphere contrasting with the bright yellow bar table and gray buffet lacquer. Classic design pieces stand alongside with contemporary ones. The headboard was built with eight mdf panel upholstery with linen and sconces fixed on the surface. The white and golden petit poa wallpaper and the dark blinds dressed the room.”

Roller shutters are shutters that are mounted above a door or window and roll down to cover and protect the door or window as needed. The shutters are typically made from metal, with the most common being aluminum and steel. Roller shutters are available in a range of different colours and patterns, which means that they can actually complement your home very well. You operate your roller shutters either using a manual winder or by using some form of motorized system such as a remote control or a control panel.

Perhaps the biggest benefit of roller shutters is that they provide your home with excellent security. This is because they are very closely fitted to the door or window and cannot be pulled away without a great deal of effort (if they can be at all). As well as being an excellent physical deterrent, they are also a brilliant visual deterrent as would be intruders see the shutters and decide that it is not worth the effort of trying to gain entry to your home, going elsewhere instead.

Another benefit of roller shutters is the fact that they are actually quite insulating. This is because many roller shutters are made to be fully insulated, so that they stop heat from entering or leaving your home. Roller shutters can actually stop heat by up to 90 percent and stop up to 70 percent of cold. As well as the thermal insulation benefits, roller shutters are also good sound insulators, reducing the transmission of sound by up to 50 percent. Not only will the inside of your home be more stable temperature-wise, it’ll also be quieter.

Roller shutters also give you a huge amount of control over the amount of light that enters the home at any given time. You can choose to completely darken a room by lowering the shutters all the way, or you can have them wide open so that sunlight floods the room. It’s completely up to you. Of course, you can also partially open or close the shutters to suit. As well as control over light, roller shutters give you control over ventilation. That is, you can open the shutters to allow fresh air to stream through the windows or door, or choose to only allow a little bit of fresh air through. Again, it’s totally up to you. Finally, roller shutters also give you control over privacy. If your neighbors are home or you don’t want passersby to see in, simply lower the shutters as you want.

Another big benefit of roller shutters is that they protect your doors and windows against the weather. If a storm or gale rolls in, just close the shutters and you can feel secure in knowing that they’ll deflect branches and other debris that can break glass and otherwise cause damage. Roller shutters also protect against embers in the event of bushfire, deflecting them away before they have the chance to cause damage.

First ask yourself whether or not you really need to remove the paint from your walls. If the existing paint is adhering well to your walls, you may be able to simply paint over it. If the paint is a dark colour and you want to replace it with a light coloured paint, it’s best to first provide one or two coats of primer. If you are repainting the walls in the same or very similar colour, you may be able to get away with just one coat to freshen up the walls.

If your wall paint is peeling, flaking or cracking, then it’s best to thoroughly remove the old paint before repainting your walls. Regardless of the method you choose, it is going to be a messy job, so first remove any furniture and lay down plenty of drop cloths. Any method you use to remove the paint will include plenty of scraping, so your two indispensable tools will be a good paint scraper and a dust mask to protect you from inhaling the fine dust you will be creating.

Start by peeling away any loose paint you find. You may discover that when you remove one paint bubble, you will easily be able to get your scraper between the surrounding paint and the surface of the wall and remove large swathes of paint without much difficulty. When it gets to the point where the paint resists removal is when you will need some assistance. There are two good ways to loosen paint from walls:

• Liquid paint removers use chemical activity to break down the paint’s chemical structure, making it soft and easy to remove with your scraper. If you choose this option, read the safety directions carefully. Wear protective gloves and eyeglasses and work in a well-ventilated area. Apply the liquid as directed and let it “set” for the specified amount of time. Most commercially available paint removers come in gel form, for added safety.

• The application of heat loosens paint from the walls and allows you to remove it easily. It’s best to use a heat gun or heat plate to do this. If you use a heat gun, start slowly and only apply as much heat as needed to make the paint easy to lift from the wall. Take a trial and error approach and always remember that there is always a fire danger involved. Never use an open flame device for removing paint. Not only is the potential fire hazard much greater, too much heat can release toxic fumes. A safer method is to use a special purpose heat plate that becomes only as hot as it needs to in order to loosen the paint.

Sanding is the least recommended way to remove paint. It produces a great deal of dust that will remain in the air for a long time and pose a health danger, not to mention a mess when it settles on your carpet and furniture. If sanding is required, keep it to a minimum. Leaded paints still pose a danger in older homes. Lead is a known poison and it can be inhaled or absorbed through the skin during the paint removal process.

The material is a bit more expensive, but normally a low-panel screen of polyester will suffice to prevent beast intrusions.

Sun-shading screens block about ninety percent of UV rays and keep the porch nice and cool, while securing your privacy.

And even if you feel comfortable with any interference, a wind resistant screen is a good idea anyway. You want your own personal rhythm of recreation to remain steady, don’t you?

Simple, modern and deep, these sink and vessel designs from Cactus Designers and Vaskeo are not made to be bold but are nice, neat and clean … just like the water they hold, the idea here is not to go over the top.

This black, round, stand-alone vessel has some waves to give it rhythm and texture but is otherwise basically a deep and wide bowl that can be set on a bathroom counter or other surface. Compelling, yes, but not too complicated.

The same can be said for the simple undulating curves of this white river sink with basic silver fixtures, angled to let water flow from below the faucet to the other end of the white box that forms the shell of the complete console.

While sticking with round shapes makes cleaning easier, there is something to be said for the simple angled forms of elemental geometric shapes – particularly if it fits the surrounding interior decor and overall bathroom design scheme.

The component parts of the Z Box by Dan Hisel are made large enough to be few in number, but small enough to carry up winding stairs and slot through conventional human-scale doorways.

Once on site, assembly is relatively simple and low-impact – it can be positioned wherever you want it within an open-plan layout, creating space within but also shaping space around it. In addition to color and texture cues, the structure pulls back at the base to make it feel more like the box is a floating element within the dwelling, not a permanent built-in object.

Here is Tim’s description of the project: This is my kitchen island, below is an unfinished utility/storage room. A hydraulic scissor lift is at bolted to the cement, and then a small frame is built on top of the scissor lift table. On top of that is a subfloor, flooring, and then the island. The cabinet doors are on the other side, and have safety push button switches that kill the electricity from the Smart Home Insteon switches, and prevent it from moving when the doors are not fully closed. This lift can easily lift over 1,500lbs, so it was an important safety feature! Please comment if you are interested in seeing the inner workings of this. Believe it or not. I used IKEA boxes and hardware with custom walnut fronts built by Scherrs.

One window, about one hundred and eighty square feet and a seven-year process of deliberating every last detail of this Seattle apartment’s design. It makes sense, in a way, since its engineer designs the interiors of (notoriously space-frugal) airplanes for a living.

The result is nothing short of a masterpiece of space-saving home engineering, with precisely calculated furniture placements, fixture choices and spatial arrangements that took Steve Sauer dozens of hours to select in almost every case.

In some instances, the results were highly-specialists faucets imported from other countries while in others, IKEA turned out to be the best fit for the need. And in yet other cases, he engineered, designed and built a solution himself. Shelves and organizers are surprisingly sparse – part of the secret is also not owning too much stuff to begin with.

There is no unnecessary divider, device or square inch of space wasted throughout the place – and it shows. Quality over quantity is the guiding principle, as it is in space-poor, high-density urban areas already. There is a reason Japanese architects are known for maximizing layouts.

Does that mean this apartment lacks amenities? Not at all: there is a bedroom area (and two beds total), a complete kitchen, bathroom with shower and even some things that are not strictly essential for survival, such as a dishwasher and bathtub (albeit underneath a secret floor panel in the entryway).

Storage space abounds as well, with closets and bike racks. And entertainment is not lacking either, as a 37-inch television (as well as music system) can attest to. His inspiration? Not only airliners, but also ships, boats and other structures where the premium cost of space drives designers to make the most out of every last corner and consider the implications of every object added to the final design. 1) Aim to accomodate all your furniture on a rug, or none of it on a rug. In other words, opt for a size that will accomodate all feet of your couch, coffee table and side chairs. Or, opt for a rug a bit smaller and arrange furniture along the periphery of an area rug. If you go for the second look, make sure the rug extends the length and width of your furniture. Generally, 8 x 5 foot rugs or 6 x 9 foot rugs work well for this effect.

2) Don’t go wall to wall. If you’re choosing an area rug, it should have some breathing space around the perimeter of the room to show off the floors. Otherwise, why not get wall-to-wall carpet? The basic rule of thumb is to leave 18 inches of space around a rug. In a small foyer or entry way, 8 to 12 inches of floor space can be acceptable.

3) In a dining room, both the table and chairs should sit on the rug. If a rug is so small that only a table can sit on it, and not chairs, the room will look awkward and it will be a serious pain to move the chairs around. Note that when chairs are pulled away from the table, they should still be able to stay within the boundaries of the rug.

4) In a bedroom, area rugs that extend beyond the bed about 18 inches look the most balanced. For smaller beds — twins and doubles, the area rug should extend beyond the bed about 12 inches.

5) Cover a high-traffic area completely, or leave it bare. It’s clumsy-looking and even dangerous to put a too-small rug in a high traffic area where someone may easily trip.

6) In irregularly-shaped rooms, consider a circular rug. In a room that is long and narrow or otherwise awkwardly shaped, a round rug can be a graceful way of defining a conversation area while still allowing high-traffic parts of the room to remain rug-free.

7) When unsure, map it out. If you just can’t decide what size rug will look good in your room use painter’s tape to map out the approximate size you like on the floor. Measure the dimensions and shop for a rug of that size.

Anytime you are in a small space, it is hard to not have clutter because it is easy to run out of space for certain items. However, what you may not realize at first is that the clutter can sometimes become a part of your overall design, thus making the room appear smaller.
